In modern society, humans feel pain because of a sense of isolation from others. We realize that communication is a basic human desire. Humans pursue and achieve their desires through language. Language is an everyday medium of communication, easily understood by everyone. It is therefore ideal as the material for my work to satisfy my desire for communication. In order to engage observers, I choose texts which are witty, pithy or are even phrased in everyday language. I use characters, language or texts, which can be interpreted in various ways, for instance containing puns, ambiguity, allegory or hieroglyphs. As a result, my selected texts convey an underlying meaning which is not immediately obvious to people when they first see the piece of work, but which will become clear to them with further scrutiny.
I am also interested in the passage of the time because it has meaning through relations with the others in human life of limited duration. My work of accumulating time shows the past and memory which is slowly fading away through the course of overlapping objects, that is, the disappearance of existence with the passage of time. However, the overlapped image of objects simultaneously shows that although everything exists only in the present, this cannot be separated from the past and the future.
I believe that when the conventional frame of ideas contained in the concept of language and time is broken and a shift of other's consciousness is aroused, a bond of empathy is formed between the artist and others. Ultimately, I want to be aware of my existence among others and perceive the world in terms of such relationships. |
